I have done this mod as described by Bruce Clarke, but I can tell you that it did not cure the backfiring. It helped to reduce it a bit. Now I can tell you guys what I did to get rid of it. The exhaust must be opened up to reduce the backpressure. IMO, this is the most important consideration. I did it in two stages, first helped more than the spacer, the next one apparently did the trick. Since I did it I had no single backfiring and the bike revs so eagerly.
What you do is drill a hole deep inside in a baffle, I drilled a hole close to 1/2" dia using a long extension with a bushing and setscrew for the drill. Next, drill four holes 3/8 or so around the exhaust outlet. Actually, later I opened these holes even more but then I installed a diffuser to the end of the muffler, something like the Supertrapp uses. I will post some pictures later. Email me if interested, and don't waste your money for pricey aftermarket exhaust.
